Un tema muy relevante en la media hoy día es el movimiento en Cataluña para la independencia de España. El estatus del región ahora es una zona debajo del pais español, con su propia idioma y mucho autonomía económica, pero esencialmente tiene los mismos derechos como una colonia de España, que no involucra mucho representación political ni autoridad en los comercios de Europa. Según las estadísticas mas actuales, la mayoría de la población quiere obtener el estatus de un país independiente. Es una buena idea? En favor: Claramente, una Cataluña independiente tendrá un sentido del nacionalismo más fuerte que tiene ahora, con muchos beneficios tangibles. El primer es la implementación de mas programas gubernamentales para promover un entendimiento mejor de la idioma Catalan en conjunción con la idioma Castilian. Este proveería tantos beneficios a la población, especialmente por estudiantes y inmigrantes. Las estadísticas demuestran que estudiantes expuestos a una educación bilingüe reciben una educación mas valuable y reciben notas mejores. Adicionalmente, la exposición a la idioma Catalan ayuda mucho en la integración de inmigrantes en la sociedad. Sin la independencia para Cataluña, España puede promover su propio idioma en la región a expensas de la idioma Catalán. Con la independencia, los dos serían una prioridad en la educación. Adicionalmente, hay un argumento que la economía de Cataluña mejorar como país independiente de España, por varias razones. Primer, los impuestos. Cataluña es un de los regiones mayores ganancia en España y en Europa, pero por este razón, España autoriza que Cataluña paga mucho en impuestos, supuestamente mas que reciben en beneficios sociales. Con la independencia, Cataluña no necesitaría pagar este impuesto y podría usar la ganancia para desarrollar su infraestructura o empresas pequeñas. Además, el crisis actual sobre la secesión possible de Cataluña causa mucha inestabilidad, y las empresas están saliendo debido a la confusión. El movimiento en Cataluña es demasiado fuerte para llegar a una parada pronto, entonces el solo modo para reponer la estabilidad es separar España y Cataluña. Con un regreso de estabilidad, un regreso de los inversiones de empresas volverían también. En oposición: Por otro lado, habrían muchos desafíos para una Cataluña independiente, desafíos que podrían pesar más que los beneficios. La economía del país podría sufrir por varias razones. A relevant topic in the media today is the movement in Catalonia for independence from Spain. The status of the region now is a zone under Spain with its own language and much economic autonomy, but essentially the same rights as a Spanish colony, which doesn’t involve much political representation or authority in European trade. According to the most recent statistics, the majority of the population wants to obtain the status of a country. Is this a good idea? In favor: Clearly, an independent Catalonia would have a stronger sense of nationalism than it does now, with many tangible benefits. The first is implementation of more governmental programs to promote better understanding of the Catalan language in conjunction with Spanish. This would provide many benefits to the population, especially students and immigrants. Statistics show that students exposed to a bilingual education are able to get a more valuable education as well as better grades. Additionally, exposure to the Catalan language helps with the integration of immigrants into society. Without independence for Catalonia, Spain can promote its own language in the region at the cost of the Catalan language. With independence, both will be prioritized in education. Additionally, there is an argument that the economy of Catalonia would improve when independent from Spain, for various reasons. First, taxes. Catalonia is one of the highest earning regions in Spain and Europe, but for this reason, Spain mandates that Catalonia pay a lot in taxes, certainly more than they receive in social benefits. With independence, Catalonia would not need to pay this tax and could use the financial gain to develop infrastructure or small businesses. Moreover, the current crisis about the possible secession of Catalonia causes instability, and companies are leaving due to turmoil. The movement in Catalonia is too strong to arrive at a stop soon, and so the only way to regain stability is to separate Spain and Catalonia. With a return of stability, a return of investments by companies would return as well. In opposition: On the other side, there would be many challenges for an independent Catalonia, challenges that could outweigh the benefits. The economy of the country could suffer for many reasons. First, without the help of the Spanish government, the new country would need to pay for its own institutions, which will be very expensive. Additionally, there is no guarantee that the new country will be accepted into the European Union, and instability could prevent its entrance. This could be a problem for Catalonia, because they will not have access to trade or the euro which will definitely harm the economy. Without the euro, Catalonia will also need to create its own currency, which won’t immediately have a high value. Another problem with independence of Catalonia is the political instability it can cause. There are various small regions across Europe that have in the past considered independence movements, but now exist in peace. A secession of Catalonia could disrupt this peace and inspire a renaissance of these movements, and the result would be a large crisis.
